BUSY TIMES IN YEAR 4!

Over the past few weeks, Year 4 have been settling into the summer term and diving into a variety of exciting and engaging new topics across the curriculum.

English

In English, we’ve started exploring the inspirational book Young, Gifted and Black. This powerful collection has given children the opportunity to learn about influential Black individuals and the lasting impact they’ve had on the world. Most recently, the children have written biographies on figures from the book. They began by creating their own subheadings to guide their writing and then carried out research using both the book and the computer suite to gather detailed information.

Science

Our new science topic is all about electricity. We began by identifying common electrical appliances found at home and in school. The children have learned about the difference between mains electricity and battery power and can now categorise various items based on how they are powered. We are now moving on to investigate the components of a simple circuit, and soon the children will be using this knowledge to construct their own working circuits.

Art

In art, we are focusing on landscapes and the techniques used by well-known landscape artists. So far, we have studied the work of Frances Hatch, who is renowned for her expressive use of watercolours. The children have been introduced to techniques such as washes and bleeds, which Hatch uses to create mood and atmosphere in her paintings. After learning about these techniques, the children had the chance to practise them in their sketchbooks.

Maths

This term in maths, our focus has been on shape and symmetry. We started by identifying different types of angles—acute, obtuse, and right angles—and locating them within various shapes. The children have done a fantastic job spotting these angles in triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons. We’re now building on this understanding by exploring the concept of symmetry and identifying lines of symmetry in a range of shapes.

PSHE

In PSHE, we have been learning about human rights. The children have discussed what rights are, why they matter, and how they apply to everyone across the world. They’ve also learned that children have their own special set of rights. As the topic progresses, we are exploring how these rights are upheld globally, and how we can all play a role in respecting and promoting them in our everyday lives.
