Year 6 LEARN BEAT BOxing

Year 6 discover their hidden talents!

Year 6 Pupils Discover Their Voice Through Beatboxing!

This term, our Year 6 children have been diving into something a little different—and very exciting! As part of our music curriculum, the pupils have been taking part in a series of beatboxing workshops, led by a talented local musician who has joined us in school to deliver the sessions.

Beatboxing, for those who might not know, is a form of vocal percussion that uses the mouth, lips, tongue, and voice to create drum sounds, rhythms, and musical effects. It’s fun, creative, and a brilliant way for children to explore rhythm and musical expression in a completely new way. From the very first session, the children were captivated.

Each week, the sessions have built on key musical skills such as rhythm, timing, listening, and improvisation, while also encouraging confidence and self-expression. The children have learnt how to layer beats, incorporate sound effects, and use their voices in unique and imaginative ways. With lots of laughter, energy, and focus, the sessions quickly became a highlight of the week for Year 6.

Working both individually and in groups, the children have now begun creating their own original beatbox pieces. These include rhythm patterns, vocal effects, and even some lyrics and melodies of their own. It has been fantastic to see the creativity flowing and the teamwork in action, as pupils collaborated to build their own unique sound.

The project is now building up to an exciting finale: a live performance of their beatbox compositions to the whole school! The children are rehearsing and fine-tuning their pieces, ready to showcase everything they’ve learnt this term. The performance will not only be a celebration of their musical journey, but also an opportunity to share their enthusiasm and talent with the rest of the school community.

We’re incredibly grateful to the local musician who has shared their expertise and passion with our pupils. Their energy and encouragement have inspired our young performers to step out of their comfort zones and try something completely new. For many of the children, this has been their first experience with beatboxing—but it certainly won’t be their last!

Music plays an important role in our school, not just as a subject, but as a way for children to express themselves, build confidence, and enjoy learning. This beatboxing project has brought all those elements together in a fresh and exciting way, and we’re proud of how engaged and enthusiastic our Year 6 pupils have been throughout.

We can’t wait to see their final performances and celebrate all they’ve achieved. Who knows—we may even have a future beatbox champion among us!
